Since COVID-19, there has been an uptick in audio books. But just because you have a book does not mean you will have an audiobook. Not all books published can get a sub-rights deal. Typically, audiobooks are selected based on several factors: buzz-worthy content, your book has been adapted for film or TV, celebrity book or you are a proven, best-selling author.

- Hiring a professional audiobook narrator: Many narrators have professional home recording setups and can bring your book to life.
- Self-narrating your book: As the author, you can choose to read your own book aloud, adding a personal touch. Professional editing is highly recommended.
- Using text-to-speech software: AI-powered text-to-speech adaptation technology, such as Amazon Polly, can artificially generate audiobooks. Careful review and editing are recommended when using AI-powered text-to-speech for timing, pronunciations and accuracy.
Audio rights can open up a new channel for your book yet it’s important to be careful you don’t go down a rabbit hole.
Getting your book adapted for film and TV (or as a stage adaptation) can be a complicated and arduous process. Typically, the process starts with finding or being contacted by a producer, director, lawyer or agency interested in your book. The next step would be a legal document called an Option Agreement which would give the interested party exclusive rights for a specific period of time to get your book developed into a screenplay (and often for them to raise funds). This process can take many months, and sometimes years.
Beware of companies or individuals promising to have your book made into a film. Research any of these types offers thoroughly and be sure to get professional advice from your publisher as well as legal advice.
Regardless, the more aware entertainment professionals and the public are of your book, the greater the possibility of heightened book sales and interest in securing an audiobook or film adaption.
